The middle of the bay does things straightforwardly well: big beach, a proper pier and a steam train waiting at the end of the promenade.
A Day Built Around the Beach
Paignton sits at the centre of Torbay, sandwiched between Torquay to the north and Brixham to the south, and it has never pretended to be anything other than what it is: an honest, generous seaside town. The beach is the main event — wide, gently shelving and backed by the green strip of Paignton Green, it offers the kind of uncomplicated stretch of sand that families return to year after year. The sea is calm here, sheltered by the bay's own natural amphitheatre of red cliffs, and the beach is large enough that it rarely feels truly crowded even on a warm summer afternoon.
The pier reaches out into the bay with Victorian confidence, its amusements and arcades cheerfully weathered. It is shorter and less grand than some of England's celebrated pleasure piers, but that is rather the point — it belongs to the town, not to a postcard. Walk to the end and the panorama opens up: Torquay's harbour to the left, the limestone headland of Berry Head beyond Brixham to the right, and the whole arc of the English Riviera curving between them.
Behind the promenade, Paignton's streets hold a modest harbour used by small fishing and pleasure boats — quieter and more workaday than Brixham's working port, but worth a few minutes. The town also has a genuine high street, which is more than many resort towns can claim.
The Steam Train South
At Paignton station, the Dartmouth Steam Railway departs along one of England's most scenic short railway lines, hugging the coast before turning inland along the River Dart to Kingswear, opposite Dartmouth. The journey is part spectacle, part nostalgia — red cliffs, glimpses of sea and the slow, sooty rhythm of a locomotive that has been making this run for decades. Even if you double back rather than cross on the ferry, the ride earns its ticket.
Paignton, in short, rewards the visitor who simply wants the seaside to deliver.
